In brief

Most infant hemangiomas are benign and resolve naturally over time. However, when a hemangioma grows rapidly, bleeds, or affects vital areas such as the eyes or airway, early medical evaluation is essential.

Hemangioma in Infants and Children: Is It Dangerous?

In most cases, a hemangioma in infants and children is a benign (non-cancerous) finding that grows during the first months of life and gradually shrinks on its own over time.
However, medical evaluation is recommended if the lesion grows rapidly, bleeds, develops an open ulcer, interferes with vision or breathing, or is located in a sensitive area such as the face or airway.

What Is a Hemangioma?

A hemangioma is a benign tumor made up of blood vessels.
It is one of the most common tumors in infancy.

It typically appears within the first weeks after birth and may look like a red patch or a pinkish-red raised area on the skin.

Is a Hemangioma Dangerous?

In most cases – no.

Most hemangiomas:

  • Grow during the first year of life
  • Stop growing afterward
  • Gradually shrink over the following years
  • Do not cause permanent damage
  • In many cases, only periodic monitoring is required.

When Should You Seek Medical Evaluation?

It is recommended to seek evaluation if:

  • The hemangioma is growing unusually fast
  • An open wound (ulcer) develops
  • There is recurrent bleeding
  • The lesion is near the eye and affects vision
  • There is concern about breathing or feeding difficulties
  • Multiple large lesions are present
  • The lesion is located in a sensitive area such as the face or neck
  • In these situations, evaluation by a specialist in vascular conditions or interventional radiology is recommended.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

  • Observation only: Most cases do not require active treatment, just regular follow-up.
  • Medical therapy: In some cases, medications can help reduce the hemangioma and slow its growth.
  • Minimally invasive vascular treatment: When the hemangioma causes complications or does not respond to medication, minimally invasive treatment may be considered.

This approach is performed by an interventional radiologist and works by reducing blood flow to the lesion, helping shrink it in a controlled manner without open surgery.
Surgical treatment – Usually performed by a plastic surgeon or pediatric surgeon.

Will There Be a Scar?

In most cases – no.

Larger hemangiomas may leave a mild change in skin texture or color, especially if complications such as ulceration occurred.

Summary

Hemangiomas in infants and children are, in most cases, a benign condition that resolves over time.
However, if the lesion grows rapidly, bleeds, or is located in a sensitive area, early medical evaluation is important.

Accurate diagnosis and professional follow-up help prevent complications and allow for appropriate treatment when needed.

If you are concerned about your child’s hemangioma, it is recommended to schedule a professional consultation and evaluation.
Early diagnosis provides peace of mind and enables personalized treatment when necessary.
