Dr. Adam Farkas is Director of the Vascular Interventional Radiology Unit and the Vascular Anomalies Clinic at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel, and Chair of the Israel Society of Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Farkas is among the pioneers of VIR in Israel a field often referred to as “surgery without a scalpel.” This approach utilizes minimally invasive procedures that allow for faster recovery without the need for open surgery.
What is Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR)?
Vascular and Interventional Radiology (angiography) is a medical subspecialty focused on targeted, minimally invasive treatments. VIR physicians use advanced imaging technologies including ultrasound, fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance), and other modalities to guide a catheter through blood vessels (arteries or veins) and treat conditions directly at their source, from the body, without open surgery.
This field combines deep diagnostic expertise, extensive clinical experience, and cutting-edge therapeutic techniques with minimal invasiveness.
Education & Training
Dr. Farkas earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree with highest honors, graduating at the top of his class from the Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York.
He then completed several years of residency training in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Jersey.
He later completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology and a Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the world-renowned University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center.
In addition, Dr. Farkas received specialized subspecialty training in:
- Vascular Anomalies
This advanced training was completed through dedicated programs at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. Some of these innovative treatments were introduced by Dr. Farkas for the first time at Shaare Zedek Medical Center and within the Israeli medical community.
Clinical Leadership & Innovation
Dr. Farkas founded and leads a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to patients with complex vascular anomalies. Within this framework, patients are evaluated by a team of specialists from various fields to develop a comprehensive, highly personalized treatment plan.
He was also the first physician in Israel to perform embolization for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids as an advanced, non-surgical alternative.
Academic & Professional Activity
Dr. Farkas is an active speaker at national and international conferences in the field of interventional radiology, with a particular focus on vascular anomalies.
Personal
Dr. Farkas immigrated to Israel in 2012 and has since lived in the Jerusalem area. He is fluent in English and Hebrew, and conversational in Yiddish and Spanish.
In his (rare) free time, as his wife would say he enjoys spending time with his supportive family and their six children, or training for his next marathon… well, half marathon.
